Bible Reading Lies, Part 1

Here are some lies that you may tell yourself about Bible reading:

1. You read this already and it didn't do anything for you.

Sounds kinda like a 4-year-old and vegetables: "I already tried it and I didn't like it!" Almost every adult now voluntarily eats things that they used to hate as a kid. Why? Because their palate matures. They're able to taste the nuances that were previously lost on them. They learn to enjoy contrast. They just plain grow up.

Growing up, tomatoes were never my thing, but over the years I have continued to gain appreciation for them. They are humble and hard-working vegetables. They deserve respect. While I previously despised them, I now see their benefits.

Perhaps the reason you don't "get something" out of your Bible reading is because you need to put aside your own understanding and prejudices and eat something that God says is good for you. Who knows, maybe you'll learn to like it.

2. You already understand everything about this passage.

"Oh, yeah, Luke 2. Story of Mary & Joseph, angels, shepherds, etc. Been there. Done that. Quoted it in the kindergarten program (I was the angel)."

If you take the same stance towards your personal human relationships, you'll end up in trouble. "I already know what you're going to say. You always do that. You'll never change. " That's a good way to kill a relationship with someone. It's also a good way to kill your relationship with the Bible.

Did you ever consider the fact that while you're reading your Bible, the Bible is reading you? The Word of God is quick (alive) and powerful. Maybe God shuts down your understanding when you come to Him and tell Him what He is going to tell you. Interesting thought, huh?
